Enjoy Nature with Misato Autumn Custom : the Umeshu Matsuri

Surrounded by mountains, the beautiful Japanese countryside of the Misato area in Yoshinogawa City hosts the "Misato Umeshu Matsuri" every November. This region is designated as a rare "Plum Wine Special Zone" in Japan, and through the event, visitors can experience the blessings of nature and the arrival of autumn.
For those planning to drink, taking the bus is recommended! It’s a safe and comfortable way to travel, allowing you to fully enjoy the event without worry.
In this article, we’ll bring you highlights from the two exciting days of the Plum Wine Special Zone festivities.

Easy access from JR Awayamagawa Station
About 1 hour by train from JR Tokushima Station.
When you arrive at JR Awayamagawa Station, head first to Misato Hotaru Museum.

Misato Hotaru Museum will act as the event's general information center and also serve as the departure and arrival point for shuttle buses to each venue.
Also, you can purchase here the 5-ticket booklet required to participate to the event. These tickets can be used to enjoy plum wine tastings and local gourmet food.

Higashino Liquor, famous for its "Ho-ho-ke-kyou"
Now, let's head to each of the venues.
Higashi Shuzo is one of the Misato region's proud sake breweries. Here, you can enjoy plum wine "Hohokekyo" made with "Ryukyo small plums," which are often used for umeboshi. The wine has a refreshing, subtly tangy taste created from these small plums, and it is especially popular among women.

In addition to plum wine, the heartwarming local cuisine from nearby restaurants is also not to be missed. Especially during the slightly chilly season, you can enjoy the blissful experience of warm dishes that deeply comfort the body.

Enjoy the supreme cup from "Oobatake" together with a breathtaking view
The appeal of Oobatake is enjoying plum wine while admiring the beautiful scenery. They have a wide variety of plum wines, divided into dry and sweet varieties, and one of the pleasures is being taught the recommended way to drink each one.

A particular highlight is the 5-year aged dry plum wine "Jisaburō." By minimizing the sweetness to the extreme, it brings out the natural flavor of the plums, offering a sophisticated, adult taste. Why not try comparing the different varieties and find the one that suits you best?

The Umeshu Matsuri is an annual autumn event loved by locals. Why not spend a special day in the Misato area, surrounded by nature? We're already looking forward to next year's event!
