A Must Drink When You Visit Tokushima!
A Complete Guide to Tokushima Craft Beers

When you travel, you definitely want to taste the seasonal specialties of the region, right?
Do you know which beer pairs perfectly with seasonal dishes?
That would be craft beer. Made at small, independent breweries, craft beer often reflects the unique characteristics of the region, making it a great match for local ingredients.
In this article, we will introduce four craft breweries in the eastern part of Tokushima, where you can enjoy craft beer made with local ingredients.
KAMIYAMA BEER

"KAMIYAMA BEER" makes craft beer using local ingredients in a way that highlights the unique characteristics of the area. The brewery is housed in a building with a large, eye-catching mural that covers an entire wall, and it includes both the brewery and a taproom.
The owners, Manus and Sayaka, chose to move from the Netherlands to this area, inspired by the "Kamiyama Artist in Residence" program in Kamiyama Town. They are experts in discovering the charm of this land.

One of their signature beers, the "SHIWASHIWA ALE," uses local Kamiyama-grown raw wheat, pilsner malt, and wheat malt. In addition, unique ingredients from Kamiyama, such as sudachi (a type of Japanese citrus) and ume (plum), are used in the brewing process, giving the beer a local twist.
From the second-floor terrace, you can enjoy a stunning view of the mountains and listen to the gentle sound of the river while savoring the beer. This place not only offers the chance to enjoy craft beer but also serves as a space where encounters with nature and people from all over come to life.

RISE & WIN Brewing Co.

In the midst of rich nature, there stands a distinctive building—"RISE & WIN Brewing Co." This brewery creates craft beer using local ingredients from Kamiyama, such as the non-standard Kamiyama Awa Bancha tea and Yukou (a type of Japanese citrus fruit) that is unique to the area.

The building, with its many windows, stands out with a unique design. It incorporates windows and doors from unused houses within Kamiyama Town. Inside, you’ll be greeted by a chandelier made of empty bottles hanging from the ceiling. This design was created using discarded building materials and empty bottles from the town, contributing to Kamiyama's declaration as Japan's first “Zero Waste” town.

Of course, the food and beer are exceptional! A must-try is the vegan-friendly "Kamiyama Shiitake Mushroom Grilled Plate." One bite of the thick shiitake mushrooms, and you’ll be hit with an explosion of umami flavor in your mouth.

Focus on their sustainable efforts through food and the delicious meals they offer!
