Sweet And Yet a Refreshing, Light and Gentle Flavor:
A Complete Guide to Awa Wasanbon Sweets

Wasanbon, a traditional Japanese sugar made from the Taketo (thin sugarcane plants grown locally in Shikoku), is produced using a traditional method. It has been enjoyed in Tokushima Prefecture for over 220 years. Due to its exceptional quality, Awa Wasanbon has been cherished as a luxury sweet in high-end confectionery shops.
Now, across Tokushima Prefecture, many new-age sweets are being created using Awa Wasanbon, blending traditional flavors with modern twists.
Here, we introduce some recommended sweets that make use of traditional flavors in new forms.
Kayu Akanean

At Kayu Akanean, you can enjoy authentic Japanese sweets made with Wasanbon, crafted with elegance and a touch of playfulness.

When visiting the main store, be sure to try their tea room. In the tranquil and serene Japanese-style setting, you can enjoy seasonal wagashi (traditional sweets), which are specially crafted by artisans and served with tea. The “Seasonal Course” allows you to savor the beautiful, changing flavors of the month. You can also enjoy their special shaved ice and red bean soup (zenzai).

On this visit, we tried "Awa no Natsu"(Awa’s Summer), a sweet inspired by the gradient of indigo dye. The fluffy sweetness of Wasanbon, paired with the delicate and beautiful appearance、 provides a truly refined and graceful experience.
